Denison woman charged with election misconduct

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Denison woman accused of voting in a December 2012 special election in Pottawattamie County even though she’s not a U.S. citizen has been charged with election misconduct.

Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz says charges were filed against Margarita Abrego in Pottawattamie County on Friday.

Schultz says his office referred the case to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation as part of his ongoing effort to uncover voter fraud. The DCI referred the case to the county prosecutor.

The case had not yet appeared in online court records so it was unclear whether she has an attorney. A telephone number could not immediately be located for her.

Abrego allegedly registered and voted in the Dec. 4, 2012, special election on a bond issue for Iowa Western Community College.
