Interstate 35 in Iowa reopens after bridge hit

CUMMING, Iowa (AP) — Interstate 35 at Cumming in south-central Iowa has been reopened after a bridge inspection team checked damage to an overpass.

Des Moines television station KCCI reports (http://bit.ly/1l4gbEd) that the bridge was damaged when a piece of construction equipment being hauled in the southbound lanes hit it Friday afternoon.

Officials say the driver miscalculated the height of the bridge, and the equipment hit a steel sleeve attached to a concrete beam on the bridge.

The team determined the damage was not significant enough to close the interstate or bridge.

Officials say the driver will be cited for failure to observe a traffic control sign.
