Police: Iowa man uses handgun on burglary suspects

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police say a Des Moines man fired a handgun at suspects trying to break into his home and injured one of them.

Des Moines police say it received a report around 4 a.m. Thursday about a burglary attempt at a home on the city’s west side. A resident said two male suspects forced open the door. The resident fired a handgun and the suspects fled in a vehicle.

Jesus Diaz was brought to a local hospital a half hour later with a gunshot wound to his arm. He was accompanied by a juvenile.

Investigators later tied Diaz’s car to the attempted burglary. Diaz told authorities he and the juvenile committed the crime.

Diaz and the juvenile face a second-degree burglary charge. Court records do not list an attorney for Diaz.
