Chickasaw Co Sheriff apprehends suspect following assault on officer


FREDERICKSBURG, IA – On Monday morning at approximately 11:00 a Chickasaw Co Deputy responded to a call of a motor vehicle accident in the City of Fredericksburg.

During the investigation of the incident, the officer administered a breath test to the driver, 28 yr old Benjamin Cooper Duitscher, who then punched the officer in the face and attempted to flee.  Duitscher was knocked to the ground by the officer who deployed his taser,  but Duitscher was able to get away on foot.

The officer sustained injuries to his face, neck and hand. Additional law enforcement officers were dispatched and a search for Duitscher began. The public was alerted thru social media and Duitscher was apprehended several hours later near the Fredericksburg Municipal Pool. He was taken into custody without further incident at approximately 2:42 and charged with:  Unsafe Turning, Driving while license revoked for previous OWI, Assault on a peace officer with intent to seriously injure, Interference with official acts with infliction of serious injury and OWI, 3rd or subsequent offense.

Two officers were treated and released at Mercy Medical Center New Hampton. Duitscher remains in custody at the Chickasaw Co Jail.
