Floyd County Attorney Passes Away

Charles City, IA – Floyd County Attorney Normand Klemesrud passed away on Sunday at Hospice of North Iowa. He was 67.

In January, he had announced he was not seeking re-election this fall.

Klemesrud was elected as Floyd County attorney in 1992 and resigned in 1994 to return to private practice.

Assistant County Attorney Marilyn Dettmer was appointed to fill the position. She served as county attorney for three terms.

In 2006 Dettmer, a Republican, was challenged for a fourth term by Klemesrud, a Democrat, and Jesse Marzen, who ran as an independent. Marzen won the election.

Marzen named Klemesrud as assistant county attorney in 2008.

In March 2010 the Iowa Supreme Court suspended Marzen’s law license for six months after the justices said he violated ethics rules by having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a client before he was elected county attorney.

The Board of Supervisors appointed Klemesrud as county attorney, and he was elected to the post in November 2010.
