CHARLES CITY, IA – What is a Hero? Well today the Iowa State Patrol honored 4th grade student Jared Cook at a surprise assembly, recognizing him for his act of heroism 2 yrs ago. In August of 2012 Jared was fishing in Lime Springs, with his friend Gunner Starks, when the skies clouded over and lightning struck Gunner. Jared who was also injured, saw his friend lying unconscious and shares what he recalls of that day:
Gunner has little memory of what happened, except hanging out with his friend fishing beforehand and then the pain of dying:
Jared was able pull himself together enough to flag down help, and Gunners mother Collette Boyle has a bit more detail of what happened :
Gunner who is now an 8th grader at Byron Middle School, suffered a traumatic brain injury and is still in recovery, but everyone is grateful for the miracle of Jared and his quick actions that day. Collette says that he is truly their hero:
Jared’s family was also on hand at the surprise assembly that was held in his honor Fri morning. His father, Jamie Cook says couldn’t be more proud of his son:
Jared was nominated for a Governors hero award but did not meet all criteria, but his story came to the attention of the Iowa State Patrol who felt that he deserved to be recognized for his act of heroism and courage. Jared Cook was presented with a framed letter of commendation signed by the Chief of the Iowa State Patrol, David Garrison.
