The Iowa State Cross Country Meet was held in Fort Dodge on Saturday and there were several area athletes achieving honors.  The Charles City Comet girls cross country team placed third overall in Class 3A with a team score of 135 points.  Leading the Comets was senior McKayla Cole who finished second overall in Class 3A, Whitney Martin finished in 17th for Charles City, Mackenzy Bilharz came in 31st, Sarah Turpen was 40th and Bailey Mitchell rounded out the scoring for the Comets with her 46th place finish.  The Comet boys cross team was represented by Gavin Connell who finished in 53rd overall in Class 3A.  In the Class 2A girls race, Osage finished in a tie for eighth place as a team with 199 points.  Megan Mooberry led the way as she finished 15th, Mia Knudsen was 29th, Madi Johnoson was 35th, Breana Barker was 35th and Makayla Mostek was 84th.  On the boys side for the Green Devils, Ben Huftalin came in 52nd.  Rockford’s Sheridan LaCoste came in second place overall in the Class 1A girls race, she was less than three seconds behind the Class 1A champion.  Congratulations to all of our area cross country runners.

The first round of the Iowa High School Football Playoffs took place on Friday night.  The top-ranked Saint Ansgar Saints were at home for their Class A match-up with Wapsie Valley.  The Saints were able to score two passing and two rushing touchdowns in their 28-10 win.  Senior quarterback Ben Boerjan completed seven passes for 93 yards which included a 13 yards touchdown pass to Parker Hendrickson and a seven yard TD pass to Ryan Peterson.  Dayton Smith had 101 rushing yards including a 34 yard touchdown run and Hendrickson scored on another running play.  Boerjan also led the Saints defense as he came up with two interceptions.  The Saints improved to 10-0 with the win and will play in the State Quarterfinals this Friday at home against Lisbon.

The New Hampton Chickasaw football team took on top-ranked North Fayette Valley on the road Friday night for the first round of the Class 2A postseason.  The Chickasaws hung tough with the Tiger-Hawks like no one had been able to do yet this season, but in the end it was North Fayette Valley getting the 21-7 win.  Keaton Geerts had the lone touchdown for New Hampton as he scored from two yards out and finished the game with 93 rushing yards.  Senior quarterback Carter Stochl completed seven passes for 141 yards on the night and the defense was led by Josh Fenske’s 15 tackles.  The Chickasaws finish a great season with a record of 8-2 while the Tiger-Hawks will play this Friday at home against Union-LaPorte City.

The Regional Finals of volleyball will be tonight for Classes 3A, 4A and 5A.  The Charles City Comet volleyball team will host Waterloo East in the Class 4A Region 5 Finals.  The Comets come in with an overall record of 36-5 while Waterloo East is 11-25.  You can tune into this match right here on KCHA starting with a pregame at 6:40 and first serve will be at 7pm.

The Osage Green Devil volleyball team will travel to West Union tonight to meet up with West Delaware in the Class 3A Region 6 Finals.  Osage volleyball is 22-11 this season and ranked 13th in Class 3A.  West Delaware comes in as the third ranked team in the state and are 42-4 this season.  First serve will be at 7pm.
