The Iowa High School Athletic Association wrapped up its 2016 football season with State Championship games in three classes. In the Class 1A Final, Hull-Western Christian defeated Iowa City Regina 47-34. In the Class 2A Championship game, Boyden Hull, Rock Valley beat Union-LaPorte City 41-22. In the Finals of Class 4A, West Des Moines Dowling won over Iowa City West 23-10.
In a game heard right here on KCHA on Saturday, the Iowa State Cyclone football team had, by far, their best game of the season as they blew out Texas Tech at home 66-10. They Cyclones stormed out to a 45-3 halftime lead and were able to coast to the easy victory. The Cyclones gained over 600 yards of total offense in the route and held the potent Texas Tech offense to just over 300 yards. The Cyclones improve to 3-8 overall this season and they move to 2-6 in the Big 12. Iowa State will wrap up their season this Saturday at home against West Virginia.
In a game heard on our sister station, 951 the Bull on Saturday, the Iowa Hawkeye football team was able to shut out Illinois 28-0 for their seventh win of the season. The Hawkeye defense held the Fighting Illioni to under 200 yards of total offense and LeShun Daniels rushed for 189 yards and two touchdowns for Iowa. The Hawkeyes are now 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten. Iowa will host Nebraska on Friday to finish up their Big Ten schedule.
The Northern Iowa Panthers suffered a season-ending loss at home on Saturday to South Dakota State. The Panthers were trailing 28-24 heading into the fourth quarter when the Jackrabbits scored 17 unanswered points in the final frame to claim the 45-24 victory. UNI finishes their season with a record of 5-6 overall and they went 4-4 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
