Charles City Comets

In a meet heard right here on KCHA on Saturday, the Charles City Comet and Osage Green Devil wrestlers were competing in Iowa Falls at the Class 2A District 4 Tournament looking to qualify for the State Meet.  The Comets were able to send four through out of their eight wrestlers and Osage qualified five grapplers out of their eight competitors.  Moving on from Charles City was Nate Lasher at 132 pounds, Dylan Koresh at 145 pounds, Alex Koehler at 182 pounds and A.J. Maloy at 220 pounds.  For Osage, Joe Jacobs at 106, Derek Fox at 152, Zach Williams at 160, Brock Jennings at 170 and Caleb Ring at 220 were the State qualifiers.  The State Wrestling Tournament begins on Thursday.

Nashua-Plainfield, North Butler, Rockford and Saint Ansgar’s District qualifiers were in Lake Mills on Saturday looking for a berth into the Class 1A State Tournament.  Nashua’s two District qualifiers, Brock Dietz and Jakob Whittinger each finished in third place, so there will not be anyone for the Huskies at the State Tournament.  North Butler’s Bryce Trees at 106, Brandon Trees at 152 and Dalton Nelson at 160 all placed in the top two, qualifying all three to the State Meet.  Will Portis at 120 and Dakota Vance at 170 will represent Rockford at the State Meet and Mitchell Smith at 285 will be the lone Saint Ansgar representative.  The Class 1A State Wrestling Meet will also begin on Thursday.

The Charles City Comet girls basketball team wrapped up their regular season on Friday night at home in a Northeast Iowa Conference match-up against Decorah.  The Comet girls were defeated 43-31 to finish their season with an overall record of 1-19 and they finish their NEIC season at 1-11.  The Charles City girls will open up postseason play on Wednesday night at Mason City.

The Charles City Comet boys basketball team was in Decorah on Friday night for their final Northeast Iowa Conference game of the season.  The Comet boys had a cold shooting night as they went 1-17 from the three-point line and dropped the game 50-43.  Charles City’s boys fall to 14-6 overall and they finish in third place in the NEIC with a record of 7-5.  They will wrap up their regular season on Thursday as they will make-up their game with Independence at home.

The Osage Green Devil and North Butler Bearcat boys basketball teams finished their regular seasons on Friday night with a Top of Iowa Conference game in Osage.  The Green Devils defeated North Butler rather easily as they won it 83-41.  The Osage boys finish their season with a record of 20-1 and they complete their conference season a perfect 16-0 while the Bearcat boys finish at 7-13 and 6-10.  The Green Devil boys open up Class 2A postseason play on Thursday at home against the winner of Sumner-Fredericksburg and South Winneshiek.  The Bearcat boys will be at AGWSR on Thursday for a Class 1A District 5 Quarterfinal.

The Osage Green Devil girls basketball team opened up postseason play with a win on Saturday as they blew out Oelwein 62-29 in the opening round of Class 3A Region 4.  The Osage girls improve to 17-4 overall this season and they will play at Clear Lake on Wednesday in the Regional Semi-Finals.

The Nashua-Plainfield Husky girls basketball team saw their season come to a close on Saturday night as they were defeated by Waterloo Columbus in a Class 2A Region 5 opening round game 71-30.  The Nashua girls end their season at 3-20.

The Saint Ansgar Saints girls basketball team was also defeated in their Class 2A Region 5 opener on Saturday.  The Saints girls lost 61-45 against Lake Mills.  The Saint Ansgar girls wrap up their season with a 4-18 record.
