Carl “John” Loewen, age 83 of Plainfield, Iowa formerly of Lawler and Waterloo, Iowa passed away on Monday, February 13, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.
A Memorial Service for John will be held at 1:00 PM on February 18, 2017 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton, Iowa with Pastor Cindy Krause officiating. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the memorial service at the funeral Home on Saturday. Burial will be held at a later date.
Carl John Loewen, Jr. was born on December 27, 1933 to Carl and Dolores (Gareau) Loewen in Chicago, IL. As a young child he moved to Lawler, Iowa with his family. John graduated from Lawler High School. After graduating, he enlisted into the United States Navy, serving from 1952-1956. Upon his honorable discharge, John returned home and began his lifelong career in the trucking industry, retiring after 51 years. On August 2, 1958 John was united in marriage to Mary Bea Hurley in Lawler, Iowa. The couple later divorced. On October 19, 1974 he married Norma Jean (Berry) Schuman, she preceded him in death in 1995. Outside of trucking, John’s family was his life. He was very proud of each of them and loved them dearly. He will be remembered for his kindness and generosity.
John is survived by his children; Dan (Norie) Loewen of Carpentersville, IL, Sherri (Scott) Custforth of Waterloo, IA, Denise (Marty) Zahn of Byron, MN; six grandchildren, Trisha, Trevor, Chad, Celine, Amber and Rachel; five great-grandchildren; four sisters; his significant sweetheart, Annie Moorman of Plainfield, IA and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother.
