KCHA Sports Report (2/15)

Red bowling ball knocking over pins in a perfect strike

The Charles City Comet boys and girls bowling teams were at the Comet Bowl yesterday competing in the Class 1A District 2 Meet and you heard the updates all afternoon long here on KCHA.  The Comet boys and girls teams fared well as each of the squads finished with the highest pin count and advanced to State.  The Comet boys started slow and found themselves trailing by 14 pins after the first individual game, but got hot in the second individual game, grabbed the lead and never looked back.  Charles City’s boys finished with a total pin count of 3161 and were led by Drew Mitchell who finished with a 2-game series of 472 which was good enough for him to earn District Champion honors.  Hunter Brockney had a 447 and Kaleb Ross had a 402.  The Comet girls were the favorites heading into yesterday’s District Meet and they didn’t disappoint as they took a 150 pin lead after the first individual game and were able to coast the rest of the way.  Their total pin count of 2904 was second to only the Comet boys as they beat the rest of the girls teams by close to 300 pins.  The defending Class 1A State Champion Macy Ross led the Comet girls with a 415 two-game series which was good enough for District Runner-Up Honors, Baili Girkin was third overall with a 412 and Katie Sickman had a 381.  Both teams will compete in Des Moines next week at the State Bowling Tournament in Des Moines.

The Rockford Warrior girls basketball team hosted Central Springs last night in a Class 2A Region 5 Quarterfinal.  The Warrior girls started the game off cold and were trailing 22-21 at halftime, but were able to turn it on in the second half and walked away with a 53-34 win.  Emma Staudt had 17 points to lead the Rockford girls and Madison McGregor added 14.  Rockford’s girls improve to 19-3 this season and will play in the Regional Semi-Finals at home on Friday against West Fork.
