Guilty pleas entered in December head-on collision

Charles City, Iowa – An Ionia man has plead guilty to charges after a head-on collision on Highway 18 in December.

44-year-old Anthony Schmitz of Ionia entered guilty pleas of child endangerment resulting in serious injury and serious injury be vehicle.  Schmitz was driving west on Highway 18 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck an eastbound vehicle driven by 52-year-old Heather Meyer of Bassett.

Schmitz had two passengers in his vehicle, 11-old Mary Jane Schmitz and 10-year-old Miley Schmitz.  Schmitz and Mary Jane Schmitz were flown to Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Miley Schmitz was transported to Floyd County Medical Center.

Meyer was also flown by helicopter to Rochester.

Reports state a blood test indicated Schmitz was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident.

He will be sentenced on April 24.
