Ankeny, Iowa – Turkey is not just for November. In fact, the Iowa Food & Family Project’s (Iowa FFP) “Join My Journey” campaign is celebrating turkey in August and invites everyone to learn a little more about the product and the farm families who provide it.
From ground turkey breast to tenderloins, turkey is a must-have in delicious dishes such as cheesy turkey lasagna, Iowa’s grilled turkey tenderloin and crock pot sweet potato and quinoa turkey chili featured in the “Let’s Eat” cookbook from the Iowa FFP.
The cookbook features over 100 recipes using a wide variety of Iowa agricultural products—soybeans, pork, beef, eggs and dairy—and includes recipes from Kristin Porter, Iowa Girl Eats, and Join My Journey host.
“My favorite turkey dish is to flatten a turkey tenderloin then roll it with stuffing and wrap it in bacon,” said Kristin Porter, Iowa Girl Eats blogger. “Turkey is a tasty source of lean protein and my family loves eating it.”
Another turkey favorite is the classic turkey sandwich. A Subway turkey sandwich to more be exact. The majority of the turkey Subway sources comes direct from farms in Iowa.
“I was excited to learn that such a large portion of turkey Subway serves comes from Iowa,” said Porter. “People are eating more local than they think.”
And that’s great news for farmers like Katie Olthoff and her husband who raise turkeys near Stanhope.
“We started our turkey farm five years ago thanks in big part to Subway’s support of Iowa turkey farms,” said Olthoff. “I didn’t know much about turkeys then, but I’m glad we can raise our family on the farm and provide such a nutritious product.”
Olthoff and Porter recently visited a Subway in Ames and saw how the sandwiches are prepared and how much people love Subway turkey sandwiches.
The poultry theme continues Join My Journey’s discovery tour of great food and the farm families who grow it.
· In July, Porter celebrated the versatility and affordability of eggs while serving breakfast pizza at an Ankeny Casey’s store
· June was dairy month, celebrated with a visit to at AE Dairy
· In May, pork topped the menu and included a visit to Jethro’s BBQ & Pork Chop Grill in Johnston
