Schmitt, Bernard-newspaperBernard Schmitt, 97, of Charles City, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Bernard Schmitt will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Roseville with Monsignor Walter Brunkan celebrating the Mass. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Roseville.

Visitation will be held at Hauser Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016 with a Scripture Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the funeral Mass at the church on Wednesday.

Bernard Jacob Schmitt, the son of Mathias and Katherine (Merfield) Schmitt, was born October 27, 1918 in on the family farm near Marble Rock, Iowa. He was raised on the farm and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Roseville. He continued to help on the family farm until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1942. Bernard proudly served his country in Europe during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned home and continued farming with his family. Bernard was united in marriage to Lillian Grimm on January 12, 1948 at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in rural Howard County, Iowa. The couple made their home near Alta Vista where they farmed and began raising their family. They would later move near Roseville continuing to raise their family and farm. Bernard never retired from his love of farming, helping his two sons until very recently.

Bernard was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Roseville. He was also a member of the V.F.W. in Charles City and the American Legion in Marble Rock. Bernard enjoyed fishing, playing cards (especially Euchre), going to dances, having his children and nephews over for coffee on Sunday mornings and camping (at least enough to cook out and then go home, never to stay the night). He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Living family members include his 13 children: Linda Schmitt, Virgil Schmitt, Albert Schmitt all of Charles City, Judy (Dennis) Kapping of Nashua, Susan Schmitt, Diana (Garland) Thompson, Karen (Ed) Olsen, Francis (Betsy) Schmitt, Connie Schmitt, Nancy (Art) Lines, Thomas (Simone) Schmitt all of Charles City, Teresa (Richard) Drilling of New Hampton and Dale (Allison) Schmitt of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Stella Fuller of Bettendorf; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian on May 9, 2000; grandson, David Kapping; four brothers: Matt, Raymond, Edward and Mark; and two sisters: Christine and Catherine.
