On Sunday at approximately 6:05am, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic assault which occurred in the 1200 block of 190th Street. The report was that a female had been assaulted by a male who left the scene.
When law enforcement arrived, there was evidence that a vehicle had gone through a ditch and crashed into a mailbox. It was determined that an assault had occurred and deputies began searching for the offender. With the assistance of the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, a residence in Cerro Gordo County was checked but the defendant was not located.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office located a cell phone number and began tracking the phone. The defendant called others making more threats and to return the residence. The occupants left the residence immediately and the Sheriff’s Office along with 6 Iowa State Troopers and aircraft began searching the area between Nora Springs and Rockford for the offender.
A Deputy Sheriff & Trooper located the vehicle and were involved in a short chase. During the chase, the defendant threw narcotics from the window. The defendant was then arrested.
The defendant has been identified as 38 year old Jason Gene Weitzel of Rockford.
Weitzel has been charged with; Strangulation Domestic Abuse Assault – Class D Felony, Threat of Terrorism – Class D felony, Carrying weapons – aggravated misdemeanor, Operating while Under the Influence – serious misdemeanor, Possession of Methamphetamine – aggravated misdemeanor, Possession of drug paraphernalia – simple misdemeanor, Driving while suspended – simple misdemeanor, No vehicle registration – simple misdemeanor, Fraudulent plates – simple misdemeanor, Failure to yield to emergency vehicle – simple misdemeanor, no insurance – simple misdemeanor.
The case is still be investigated and further charges are pending.
Weitzel is currently in the Floyd County Jail awaiting his initial appearance.
