Osage, Iowa (AP) – A northern Iowa school has voted to let its high school principal run for a state House seat.

The Osage school board met Thursday morning and approved a request by Osage High School Principal Tim Hejhal that he be allowed to seek the District 51 seat. Republican state Rep. Josh Byrnes says he won’t seek re-election.

Hejhal says he would want to continue working as principal if he were elected.

Hejhal is a Democrat and will face Northwood Mayor Jane Bloomingdale, a Republican.

District 51 encompasses Howard, Mitchell and Worth counties and part of Winneshiek County.
