Charles City, Iowa – Will you be the next Charles City BBQ Challenge champion?

Smoking team registrations are now being accepted for the competition which will take place on Saturday, June 18, in conjunction with the Charles City Challenge: Whitewater Weekend. The BBQ Challenge will be from noon to 7 p.m. in the parking lot behind City Hall.

Barbeque competitors will again be along the river all day smoking ribs in an effort to take home bragging right, prize money and a trophy. The public will be invited to vote for their favorite ribs by purchasing a ticket to sample all the competitors’ barbecue. To become a competitor in the BBQ Challenge, applications are available at the Charles City Area Chamber of Commerce Office at 401 N. Main St. or on our website, This year’s competition will be capped at 20 teams, so don’t wait too long to sign up!

The winning contestants will be announced at the end of the evening, with an overall judging grand champion as well as a People’s Choice winner based on the voting ticket results. A total of $1,200 in prize money will be awarded.

There will be 100 VIP tickets sold to the public for $25 each that will get you a rib to sample from each of the participating BBQ teams. Those are available at the Chamber office and, if any remain, the day of the event. There will also be a limited number of ala carte tickets available on June 18 that will allow the public to sample a total of three ribs of their choice for $5.
