Family Is The Focus This Independence Day In Charles City

Charles City, Iowa – If you are looking for something to do as a family, then Charles City is the place to be this Fourth of July holiday weekend!

In addition to Kids’ Day on Friday and all of the children’s-related activities planned around town that day, the rest of the Fourth of July Celebration Saturday through Monday also offers things for all ages … and that families can do together.

On Friday evening, the Water Ball Fights down at Central Park, sponsored by Cedar Valley Iowa Realty, will open at 6 p.m. with a Family Division. Three-person teams will compete in the double-elimination format for a chance at the prize money by donning firefighter gear and using a fire hose to try and push a suspended barrel across the other team’s finish line … a reverse tug-of-war, if you will. There will also be a Business Division at 7 p.m. for business teams to compete against one another, as well as an Open Division at 8 p.m. Entry fee is $10 per team.

Then on Saturday, July 2, the games and activities in Central Park will include Pedal Car Races with a Family Division at 6 p.m. and an Open/Business Division at 7:30 p.m. Four-person teams will again compete for prize money in timed heats, with the top three times facing off in their divisional championship. The first three team members will each pedal around one lap, while the fourth team member will have to complete two laps to the finish line. Entry fee is $20 per team.

Sunday, July 3, is All-American Family Fun Day in Central Park, starting at 1 p.m. There will be an outdoor Pinewood Derby open to all who still have their Cub Scout Pinewood Derby cars. Troop 1087 will also have their pedal cars out to ride (for a fee), while a number of fun do-it-yourself games will be set up around the park for families to play free of charge. Those will include a giant Jenga game, Yard Yahtzee with giant dice, a giant croquet game and more.

The fireworks Sunday night at 10 p.m. and the Independence Day Parade on Monday at 10:30 a.m. are always fun for families to experience together. There will also be food and beverages available for sale in Central Park throughout most of the weekend when the family gets hungry.
