Decorah chief having trouble finding new officers

Decorah, Iowa – Police officers potentially put their lives on the line every day, but lately, multiple highly-publicized acts of violence against and involving law officers have contributed to a hush on recruitment efforts. In northeast Iowa, Decorah Police Chief Bill Nixon says it appears fewer and fewer people want to work in law enforcement.

Nixon has been Decorah’s police chief for six years. He says the number of applications for openings has significantly decreased in that time.

Nixon says no one in law enforcement wants to lower standards for hiring officers, but if the current trend continues, some departments may be forced into doing just that.
