Man shot while trying to run over Iowa officer gets 25 years

West Union, Iowa (AP) – A man has been given 25 years in prison for trying to run over an officer in Fayette County.

Abel Quijas Jr., of Maynard, was sentenced last month. In May he was convicted of attempted murder.

Prosecutors say officers posing as delivery men intercepted a package with crystal methamphetamine from California meant for Quijas, who was staying at his father’s home in September 2014. A pursuit ensued, and authorities say Quijas tried to kill an Oelwein police officer by running him over with a car.

Quijas was treated for a gunshot wound after the incident.
