Floyd, Iowa – A group of Floyd County citizens will be granted 15 minutes at the Iowa Department of Transportation Board of Commissioner’s meeting, which is slated for Tuesday, August 9th in Sioux City. The group will detail to the board why an overpass at the Avenue of Saints and Quarry Road in Floyd could be placed on the agency’s 5-year plan.

Major concerns are the current semi-trailer traffic going to and from the Valero ethanol plant in Floyd, and that future traffic that will more than likely be generated from a new truck stop which is currently under construction at the intersection, which will be located opposite a current truck stop in Floyd, 218 Fuel Express and the Wagon Wheel Restaurant.

The intersection has been a concern for years, but the effort to get the overpass approved and on the Iowa DOT’s 5-year plan comes after 23-year-old Floyd resident T.J. Houdek was killed at the intersection on July 18th.

Nearly 3,000 people have signed an online petition calling for increased safety measures at the intersection.

A community meeting was held last week at the Floyd Community Center, in which nearly 120 concerned citizens signed hard copies of the petition, which was created by a friend of Houdek’s.

The online petition can be found at change.org.
