Sheriff, deputy help deliver baby on side of Iowa highway

911 Emergency response police car speeding to scene of crime

Dike, Iowa (AP) – A sheriff and sheriff’s deputy from different Iowa counties are being hailed after helping deliver a baby on the side of an east-central Iowa highway.

The roadside delivery happened Wednesday along U.S. Highway 20 just east of Dike.

Grundy County Sheriff Rick Penning says his Hardin County counterpart, Sheriff Dave McDaniel, and a Grundy County deputy were passing by and stopped to help with the woman in advanced labor. Penning says fire and ambulance crews were dispatched to the scene.

Penning says the mother and her newborn were taken to a Waterloo hospital and were reported in good condition.
