We begin today’s report with a recap of the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State Baseball Tournament.  In a Class 2A semi-final, Clear Lake defeated Hinton 10-7 to advance them to the State Finals for the third year in a row.  Clear Lake won the Class 3A title in 2014, won the Class 2A title last year and will look to complete the three-peat tomorrow against Kuemper Catholic.

The Mason City Newman Knights will not have the opportunity to three-peat as they were upset yesterday in the Class 1A semi-finals by Remsen, St. Mary’s 5-3.  Remsen will meet up with their fellow War Eagle Conference member West Sioux tomorrow in the finals.

Classes 3A and 4A will have their semi-final games today.  In Class 3A, it will be Carlisle taking on Pella and Harlan against Solon.  In Class 4A, Waukee will meet up with Cedar Rapids Prairie and Iowa City West will play against Des Moines Roosevelt.  The Championship games in all classes will be held tomorrow.

The 2016 Olympic Games begin a wee k from today and two Iowa natives made the U-S Olympic Track and Field team. Sioux City native Shelby Houlihan is headed to Rio after finishing second to Molly Huddle in the 5,000 meter run at the U-S Olympic Trials.

The former Sioux City East standout set a personal record with a time of 15 minutes, six-point-14 seconds.

Webster City native Jenny Simpson pulled away down the stretch to win the 1500 meter run.

It will be Simpson’s third trip to the Olympics.
