Man facing murder charge found dead in Iowa jail

West Union, Iowa (AP) – A rural Fayette man charged with murder has been found dead in the Fayette County Jail.

Jail staff found 39-year-old Matthew Braun unconscious in an inmate shower area around 9:45 p.m. Monday.

Staff attempted to revive Braun, but he was later pronounced dead.

Sheriff Marty Fisher says the death does not appear to be suspicious and there was no indication of foul play. He did not give other details of the death and said an autopsy has been ordered.

Braun was being held on a first-degree murder charge. He was accused of beating to death 57-year-old Kris Simpson, a fellow resident at Prairie View Residential Care Facility, in 2012. Braun’s case had been delayed multiple times over questions about his mental competency.
