Charles City, Iowa – Charges have now been filed against 44-year-old Anthony Schmitz of Ionia, who was involved in an accident on Highway 18 west of Commercial Avenue in Floyd County on December 26th.

Schmitz and his two passengers, 11 year old Mary Jane Schmitz and 10 year old Miley Schmitz, were traveling west on Highway 18 when Schmitz crossed the center line, heading an eastbound vehicle driven by Heather Meyer of Bassett.

Schmitz said he was swerving to miss a rabbit.

Meyer and Schmitz along with the two passengers were all taken to Floyd County Medical Center.

Charges were now filed against Schmitz after a blood test revealed he was under the influence of amphetamines/methamphetamines at the time of the crash. He has been charged with serious injury by vehicle, two counts of child endangerment and operating while under the influence – first offense.

Witnesses at the scene of the accident said Schmitz was trapped inside his vehicle and was trying to escape before authorities came on the scene of the accident.
