Updated: Man died of gunshot wound in Sumner; investigation continuing

Updated story at 12:26pm Thursday –

On Wednesday at 7:57 am, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from 17486 T Avenue in Sumner, Iowa on the report of an unresponsive male lying at the end of the driveway of the residence.  The Sheriff’s Office and EMS personnel responded, located the male, and determined that he was deceased.  The deceased was identified as the owner of the residence, 39 year old Josh Brayton.  The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was requested to assist with the investigation.

On Thursday, an autopsy was conducted by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Iowa and determined that Brayton died of a gunshot wound.

The investigation into Braton’s death is on-going.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is asking for anyone with information regarding this incident or who may have passed the area of 17486 T Avenue on the early morning hours of February 22nd, 2017 to contact the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office at (563) 422-6067.


Hawkeye, Iowa – A homicide investigation is underway near Hawkeye.

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is on the scene of a death which occurred near Hawkeye on Wednesday.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department says they received a 9-1-1 call after a 39-year old man was found bleeding from his chest at the end of his driveway.

Few details have been released and the victim has not been identified.

Fayette County Sheriff Marty Fisher says they believe this is an isolated incident and there’s no threat to the public.
