Severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall possible late this afternoon into tonight

Pea sized hail and heavy rain impact downtown Charles City on Monday evening March 6th, 2017

Charles City, Iowa – The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight to enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms across the area for this afternoon into tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, periods of heavy rain are possible late this afternoon and evening, with widespread amounts of 1 inch expected and some localized 3 inch totals. With the wet soil conditions across the area, any heavy rain could result in rises on area rivers and may lead to flooding. Some flash flooding could also occur if the rain falls in a short period of time.

In addition to the heavy rain, there could be a risk for large hail and damaging winds with some thunderstorms late this afternoon and evening. This threat will mainly be south of Interstate 90. For areas south of a line from Charles City to New Hampton to Decorah, an isolated tornado is also possible. Continue to monitor forecasts closely and remain weather aware!
