KCHA Sports Report (7/17)

Charles City Comets

In a game heard right here on KCHA Friday night, the Charles City Comet baseball team was in Waverly for a Class 3A District 5 Semi-Final against Decorah. The Comets loaded the bases in the first inning with only one out, but were unable to score which set the tone for the game. The Comets would strand ten runners on base throughout the game and were unable to push across a run which led to a 3-0 loss. Drew Mitchell pitched very well as he threw the full game giving up two earned runs on eight hits and he struck out four. Mitchell also had one of three Comet hits in the game with Nate Lasher and Wyatt Stevenson supplying the other two. The Comet baseball team ends their season with a record of 10-21.

The Saint Ansgar Saints baseball team was in New Albin on Saturday night for their Class 1A District 5 Final against Kee High. The Saints fell behind early in the game and entered the top of the seventh trailing 5-2. With two outs in the inning, Saint Ansgar mounted a rally and scored two runs to pull to within a run, but were unable to get the tying run home and lost the game by a final score of 5-4. The Saints finish their season with a record of 26-7.

The New Hampton Chickasaw baseball team was at home on Saturday night for a Class 2A District 5 Final against South Winneshiek. The Chickasaws started out hot as they scored six runs in the first two innings and were able to cruise to a 9-2 win. Carter Stochl led the New Hampton offense with two hits, an RBI, and three runs scored. Ryan Gorman had a double, a run scored, and three runs batted in and Keegan Tenge. Josh Fenske and Aden Zwanziger each had an RBI and a run scored. Gorman pitched the first three innings of the game, gave up two runs, and struck out three while Tenge picked up the win as he pitched the final four innings, gave up no runs and no hits, and struck out seven. The Chickasaws improve to 32-2 on the season and will try and advance to the State Tournament tomorrow night as they will take on Denver in the Sub-State Final in Cedar Falls.

The Charles City Comet softball team will begin their State Tournament run tomorrow night in Fort Dodge as they will take on Fairfield in the Class 4A State Quarter-Finals. The game will be played at 5 pm and I will have a complete preview of that game during tomorrow’s Sports Report.

There was a late run and a first-time winner at the John Deere Classic near the Quad Cities over the weekend. Ron Gerrard reports.
