In a game heard right here on KCHA last night, the Charles City Comet softball team opened up their 2017 State Tournament run in Fort Dodge with a Quarter-Final match-up against Fairfield. The Trojans loaded the bases in the first inning with only one out, but Comet pitcher Sammy Heyer got out of the jam to give the Comets a chance to score first. Charles City was able to do just that as Ciana Sonberg came up as the second hitter in the game for Charles City.

That’s Erik Hoefer with the call. The Comets would add another run in the first and another in the top of the second which gave them a 3-0 lead. Fairfield would tie it right back up with three runs in the top of the third inning, but it wouldn’t be tied for long. Tayler Schmidt stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the third looking to give the Comets the lead once again.

The score would remain 4-3 until the top of the sixth when Fairfield was able to tie the game back up. With the score knotted at four into the bottom of the seventh, Charles City had two runners on base and Shantel Van Hauen was at the dish.

Van Hauen’s single catapults the Charles City softball team into the State Semi-Finals where they will take on Ballard. That game will be played tomorrow afternoon and you can tune into the game here on KCHA.

In a game heard on our sister station 951 The Bull last night, the New Hampton Chickasaw baseball team was in Cedar Falls in a Sub-State Final against Denver. The Cyclones struck first with three runs in the top of the third inning on just one hit. New Hampton would come back to tie it up in the bottom of the fifth inning as Wyatt Stochl, Carter Stochl, and Ryan Gorman all crossed home plate. Denver would take the lead right back with another unearned run in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead which would be the way the game ended as the Chickasaws saw their season come to a close. Carter Stochl battled control problems on the mound as he finished the night with two walks and three hit batsmen, but also gave up just one hit and struck out eight. New Hampton finishes their season with a record of 32-3 and a third straight Northeast Iowa Conference title.

In other playoff baseball news from around the area, the Waverly-Shell Rock baseball team used a five run fourth inning to get a 6-3 lead over Decorah on Monday night. They were able to hold onto that lead and win 6-5. That win to earns them the Class 3A District 5 Championship. Waverly will now play in the Sub-State Final tonight against Dubuque Wahlert at home. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union will continue its State Tournament today with consolation round games in Classes 2A through 5A. The Central Springs Panther softball team will play against Waterloo Columbus in a Class 2A Consolation Semi-Final. Central Springs comes in at 29-5 this season while the Sailors are 34-6.  This game will begin at 10 am and if the Panthers win, they will play in the fifth place game today at 2. If they lose, they will play at 2 in the seventh place game.
