A fish kill in Winneshiek County earlier this month led the DNR on an investigation as to where the contaminated water came from.
The kill happened four miles southwest of Decorah and it has been determined that a dairy farmer in Ridgeway had spread manure on Aug. 21. Later that same night it rained washing the manure into Dry Run Creek.
DNR officials traced the water back to the farm to discover where the contamination started. The kill was reported on Aug. 23, and nearly five miles of water was affected.
No game fish died, and the farmer has since pumped 10,000 gallons of water from the creek to prevent further damage.
