Collegiate Football on the Field with room for copy

Week one of the Iowa High School football season is in the books.  Here is how our area teams fared.  The Charles City Comet football team was in New Hampton for their opener.  The Comets were able to move the ball with their new flexbone offense, but three turnovers prevented them from getting into the end zone.  Charles City fell to the Chickasaws 14-0.  Mike Cranshaw completed five passes for 56 yards and Dylan Koresh led the team in rushing with 61 yards on the ground.  Sam Niichel anchored the Comet defense with seven tackles including three for loss and Trey Walker had six solo tackles.  Charles City will take their 0-1 record to Comet Field this Friday night where they will square off against Osage.

The Nashua-Plainfield Husky football team was dominant in their season opener on Friday night at Postville.  The Huskies used their rushing attack for four touchdowns and Levi Enright returned an interception 28 yards for a score en route to a 38-0 win.  Tristan Brase led Nashua with 88 rushing yards, Mason Hyde gained 58 yards on the ground and scored three touchdowns and Luke Bucknell was able to score a rushing touchdown.  The Huskies now sit at 1-0 this season and they will play another non-district game this Friday at home against Hudson.

The Osage Green Devil football team found themselves in an exciting game on Friday night at home against Saint Ansgar.  The Saints jumped out to a 24 point lead at halftime as they dominated all three phases of the game early.  The Green Devils would not go away easy though as they were able to make it close with four passing touchdowns in the second half, but it wasn’t quite enough as they lost the game 41-35.  Riley Olson finished the game with 199 passing yards and five touchdowns with Lucas Schwamman catching two of those touchdowns and Nathan Bushbaum, Jayden Hanson and Hayden Meek each had one TD reception.  Collin Kramer completed six of nine passes for Saint Ansgar for 129 yards and three touchdowns.  Dayton Smith rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown, Josh Van Vliet had a rushing touchdown and Adam Williams recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown.  The Green Devils will look for their first win this Friday night at Charles City while Saint Ansgar will try and move to 2-0 at South Winneshiek.

The Rockford Warrior football team opened up their season in Manly on Friday night against Central Springs.  The Warriors hung tough with the Panthers, but ultimately lost the game 36-21.  Quarterback Zach Bushbaum had two rushing touchdowns and completed 14 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown pass to Tanner Grady who was his favorite target as Grady finished the night with 125 receiving yards.  Dillon Schriever led Rockford in rushing with 59 yards on the ground.  The Warriors will look to get in the win column this Friday night at North Union.

The North Butler Bearcat football team was able to pick up an opening week win as they defeated Starmont at home 21-7.  The Bearcats will finish up their non-district schedule this Friday with a road contest against GMG Garwin.

And finally today, the Charles City Comet volleyball team went 3-1 at their own tournament on Saturday.  The Comets picked up wins against Decorah, Iowa City Liberty and Mason City, but lost a close 2-1 match against Iowa Falls-Alden.  The Comet volleyball team begins their season with that 3-1 record and will be off until next Saturday when they participate in a tournament hosted by West Des Moines Valley.
