In a game heard right here on KCHA Friday night, the Charles City Comet football team opened up District play on the road at South Tama.  The Comets struck first on a Tyreque Baker touchdown run in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.  South Tama would score a touchdown in the second quarter to tie things up at seven heading into halftime.  The Trojans took their first lead of the game with a rushing touchdown in the third quarter and led it 13-7.  The Comets regained the lead with Baker’s second touchdown of the night and we’re up 14-13 after the extra point.  Three plays later Sam Niichel grabbed an interception and returned it for a touchdown to give Charles City a 20-13 lead.  South Tama come roaring back and tied things up at 20 after a touchdown.  Pinned deep in their own territory, the Comets fumbled for the seventh time of the night in their own end zone, and the Trojans went up 22-20 after the safety.  South Tama would score on their next possession and the game ended with the Trojans on top 29-20.  The Comet football team falls to 1-2 overall this season and they begin District play 0-1.  They return home this Friday night to take on Cedar Rapids Xavier.

The Nashua-Plainfield Husky football team was in Saint Ansgar on Friday night for their District opener against the Saints.  The game ended up being a shootout with both teams scoring five touchdowns, but it was the Saints who converted on more extra points and won the game 35-32.  The Huskies did their damage through the air as Dayton Hansen threw for 242 yards and four touchdowns.  Hansen tossed the four touchdown passes to four different receivers as Travon Adams, Levi Enright, John Krull and Mitchell Malven all had TD receptions.  The other Nashua touchdown came on a Mason Hyde 9-yard run.  Saint Ansgar’s offense did not complete a pass, but their running game gained 364 yards.  Dayton Smith ran for 155 yards and a touchdown, Collin Kramer rushed for 119 yards and three touchdowns and Ethan Kirchgatter rushed for 60 yards and a score.  The Saint Ansgar football team is now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in District play.  Nashua falls to 1-2 and 0-1.  The Saints will be at North Butler this Friday night while the Huskies will host Rockford.

The Osage Green Devil football team was at home on Friday night for their District opener against Clarion-Goldfield.  The Green Devils were dominant on both sides of the ball as they blew-out the Cowboys 34-0.  Osage did all of their offensive damage in the first and fourth quarters as they scored 14 points in the first quarter and put 20 points on the board in the fourth.  Green Devil quarterback Drew Olson was responsible for three touchdowns as he threw for two and ran for one.  The Osage football team improves to 1-2 on the season and they begin District play at 1-0.  The Green Devils will travel to Clear Lake this Friday night.

The North Butler Bearcat football team suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night as they were beaten at West Hancock 62-18.  The three Bearcat scores all came on the ground as Rhett Lammers ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns and Kane Allison scored a rushing touchdown as well.  North Butler football is now 2-1 overall and they start District play at 0-1.  They will look for their first District win this Friday night at home against Saint Ansgar.

The Rockford Warrior football team was unable to get into the win column on Friday night as they were upended in their District opener at home against Grundy Center.  The Warriors were over-matched and lost the game 49-0.  Rockford football is now 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in District play.  They’ll be in search of their first win on Friday night at Nashua.
