Dead Cattle in Winneshiek County Leads to Charges

Burr Oak, IA – Dead livestock in Winneshiek County led to an investigation where charges were filed against a farmer.

The investigation happened west of Burr Oak. Several dead calves were found, and that allowed for a search warrant to be executed. After the search, 24 dead calves total were found.

51-year-old Craig Underbakke is now facing a few misdemeanor charges: neglect of livestock which is a serious misdemeanor, and multiple counts of failure to properly dispose of dead animals which are simple misdemeanors.

Livestock that were still living were taken from Underbakke and are currently being looked after by a veterinarian. The animals are being held at a private feed lot.
