In a game heard right here on KCHA last night, the Charles City Comet boys basketball team opened up their season at home against Dike-New Hartford. The game went back and forth the whole night as the Comets led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Wolverines used a big second quarter to take a ten point lead into halftime. The Comets would take the lead back at the end of the third quarter and led it 52-50 heading into the fourth. The trend continued in the fourth quarter unfortunately as Dike-New Hartford was able to walk away with the win by a final score of 69-63. The Comet boys begin their season at 0-1 and will be back in action on Saturday at Algona.
The Charles City Comet wrestling team also kicked off their season last night with a dual meet against Independence in New Hampton. The Comets came up on the short end of the match as they lost 42-15. Charles City did not wrestle against New Hampton as originally scheduled, so they start their season at 0-1 and will participate in their first tournament on Saturday in Cedar Falls.
The Nashua-Plainfield girls and boys basketball teams hosted Rockford last night in Top of Iowa Conference play. In the girls game, Rockford was able to win 52-33 behind 13 points from Amber Reams and Amber Thieman had 11 points for the Warriors. Nashua’s girls fall to 0-2 overall this season and they are 0-1 in conference play while the Rockford girls improve to 1-1 and 1-0. In the boys game, Rockford took a three point lead into halftime and built it to seven in the second half and were able to come away with a 73-66 win. Alex Schriever and Max Rooney each had 17 points for the Warriors to lead all scorers. The Rockford boys are now 2-0 overall this season and 1-0 in league play while Nashua’s boy start the season at 0-1. The Husky boys and girls will play again on Friday at home against Northwood-Kensett and the Warrior boys and girls will travel to West Fork on Friday for their next games.
The Osage Green Devil girls and boys basketball teams were able to sweep Mason City Newman last night in their girl/boy double header in Mason City. The Green Devil girls used a 23 point second quarter and held a 20 point lead at halftime. The Knights would not go away quietly though as they stormed back in the second half. In the end though, it was Osage’s girls who hung on to the win 60-49 to begin their season at 1-0 overall and in Top of Iowa Conference play. The Green Devil boys held control of their game against Newman and were able to win rather easily 66-51. Drew Olson had 25 points to lead the Osage offense who begin their season at 1-0 overall and in conference play as well. Both the Green Devil boys and girls basketball teams will return to action on Friday when they host Central Springs.
The North Butler Bearcat boys and girls basketball teams were able to pick up Top of Iowa Conference wins at Northwood-Kensett last night as the girls won easily 49-12 and the boys earned a 54-41 win. Nicole Heeren had 18 points for the Bearcats and her teammate Marcy Jacobs had 12 to help the North Butler girls start their season at 1-0 overall and in league play. Dylan Clipperton led the Bearcat boys with 20 points and Kendrick Miller had 14. The North Butler boys also begin their season at 1-0 both overall and in conference games. The Bearcat boys and girls will play again this Friday night at home against Mason City Newman.
