Plans for Charley Western Bridge

Danger signs posted on the banks of the Cedar River upsteam from unstable bridge

Charles City, IA – The Charley Western Bridge has been on the minds of city council members since it started showing signs of deteriorating last spring. The bridge is over 100 years old, and soon residents could see changes to it.

Steve Diers, Charles City’s city administrator, says that reviving this bridge is a goal for the council.

Flooding and years have made this historic structure crumble. The rebuilding of this bridge will take several stages.

The Charley Western Bridge is not the only bridge in Floyd County that is structurally deficient. Roughly 18% of all the bridges in the county that are registered are deficient.
