The NCAA held its Wrestling National Championships in Cleveland over the weekend with the Finals on Saturday night. Spencer Lee became the first true freshman to win a national title for the Iowa Hawkeyes since 1993 Lee topped Nick Suriano of Rutgers 5-1 at 125 pounds as the Hawkeyes claimed third place in the team race.
Lee suffered an ACL injury his senior season in high school and began his first season with the Hawkeyes as a redshirt.
Lee says he and the Hawkeyes have lofty goals going forward as they try to reel in Penn State. The Nittany Lions claimed their seventh team title in the last eight years.
The Drake Men’s basketball season came to an end last night at Northern Colorado. Todd Kimm reports.
The Iowa Hawkeye and Drake Bulldog Women’s basketball teams each bowed out of the first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament over the weekend. The six seeded Hawkeye women suffered an upset loss to eleventh seeded Creighton as they were beaten 76-70 on Saturday night. They finish their season with a 24-8 record and a fourth place finish in the Big Ten standings. The 14-seeded Drake women lost their match-up with third seed Texas A&M 89-76. The Bulldog women end up with a Missouri Valley Conference title and an overall record of 26-8.
