Prosecutors: Alta Vista Baby Died From Malnutrition And Infection

Mount Pleasant, Iowa – Prosecutors say four-month old Sterling Koehn died from malnutrition, dehydration and infection.

In the first day of the murder trial for 29-year-old Zachary Paul Koehn of Alta Vista, three witnesses testified where they say the baby died.

Prosecutor Coleman McAllister told jurors Sterling had been in the same diaper from nine to 14 days when medics were called to the apartment on August 30, 2017.  The diaper was full of feces that attracted bugs and maggots. The diapers contents irritated the baby’s skin, which ruptured and e.coli and bacteria set it, leading to Sterling’s death.

The trial has moved from Chickasaw County and is happening in Mount Pleasant.
