High School Basketball Begins Tonight, ISU loses to Arizona, Hawks Crack Top 25

The 2018-19 winter sports is underway and here are the matchups for girls basketball:

Charles City vs Clear Lake

Nashua-Plainfield at Tripoli

Rockford versus Clarksville

Riceville versus Saint Ansgar

Arizona 71, Iowa State 66

Iowa State fell in the opening round of the Maui Invitational to Arizona. The Cyclones were outscored 27-12 to close the game in a 71-66 loss.


John Walters with the call on the Cyclone Network. Marial Shayok led ISU with 19 points and 14 rebounds while Waukee native Michael Jacobson added 16 points.


With a short bench fatigue may be a factor with three games in three days. Jacobson, one of three starters, logged 36 minutes or more.


The Cyclones play this afternoon at 4, pregame starts at 3.

Iowa Men’s Basketball Ranked

For the first time since 2016 the Iowa basketball team is nationally ranked. The Hawkeyes are 4-0 after beating Syracuse and UConn in New York City. They are ranked 20th in the Associated Press Poll.


That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery who feels his team deserves to be ranked.


Junior forward Tyler Cook says the Hawkeyes were motivated by last year’s 14-19 record.


Sophomore center Luka Garza says the experience gained from last year has paid off.
