The Iowa Hawkeyes took advantage of three turnovers and held on down the stretch to upset 18th ranked Mississippi State 27-22 in the Outback Bowl.
Gary Dolphin with the call on the Hawkeye Network. Iowa finishes 9-4 and posts just its second nine win season since winning the Orange Bowl in 2010.
Iowa won despite posting negative 15 yards of rushing. Quarterback Nate Stanley tossed three touchdown passes, two of them to game MVP Nick Easley.
Easlery’s third quarter touchdown catch gave the Hawkeyes the lead for good.
Iowa trailed 6-0 at the end of one quarter but Easley’s 75 yard touchdown reception helped the Hawkeyes reel off 17 straight points.
Mississippi State rallied to take the lead after back to back Iowa turnovers to start the third quarter.
That’s Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz who says penalties were also a factor. Mississippi State had nine for 80 yards while the Hawkeyes did not draw a flag.
Ferentz says the Bulldogs were as good as advertised.
