Climbing to new heights: Students design and construct climbing rock wall

Charles City, Iowa – Students at Charles City High school are climbing to new heights.

That’s Addison Olson who is a sophomore in ‘Expeditions’ class.  Her class has constructed the school and area’s first rock climbing wall.

It has four routes with different difficulties tailored to the climber’s experience level.

Last spring the class began designing the wall and construction began in September.  Instructor Rob Pittman tells KCHA News the wall is a collaboration of the student’s designs.

The wall is paid for through grants and several fundraising efforts.  Pittman says the wall not only offers a way to stay healthy, but could provide work-related experience.

The wall opened Tuesday morning and is usable but the class plans to build more climbing panels on either side.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City. As a young kid, he would always be caught singing along to songs on the radio. He says he's good at karaoke but we think otherwise. ;) In his free time, he enjoys beginning new projects at home and hardly ever finishing them. Chris lives in Charles City with his wife Vicki, daughter Brynlee and son Jaxon.
