Betty M. Johnson, age 84, of Osage, died Sunday, February 17, 2019, at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2019, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Bryan Odeen officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Betty’s wishes were that there be no flowers or plants for the visitation and service. Memorial contributions will be distributed by her children to Betty’s favorite charities in her name.
Betty M. Johnson was born May 9, 1934, in rural Osage, the daughter of Thelman and Christine (Nodland) Motland. She was baptized at Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Meroa, Iowa, confirmed at Osage Lutheran Church in Osage (now Our Savior’s Lutheran Church), and graduated from Osage High School in 1952. Betty was married to Charles Johnson on July 6, 1952, at Osage Lutheran Church, the next to last couple to be married there before the new church was built.
They made their home on a farm near Osage, where Betty took pride in being a supportive farmwife or “Household Activities Coordinator” (as she called it). Betty was a longtime active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, where she served on several boards, taught Sunday School, was Secretary of the church council, served on altar guild, was stewardship co-chairman, and a member of Eve Circle. She was also a 4-H leader, served on the county extension council, and was a member of Faith Home Auxiliary.
Betty is survived by her children, Pat (Ken) Fox of Waverly, Deb Henderson of Charles City, David (Linda) Johnson of Woodland Park, Colorado, Brian (Nancy) Johnson of Cambridge, Linda (Brad) Toppin of Charles City, and Mark (Becky) Johnson of Osage; two special nephews, Dean (Jill) Olson of Orchard, and Bruce (Sue) Olson of Lamberton, Minnesota; grandchildren, Nicole Shearer, Matthew Fox, Dan Henderson, Joe Henderson, Angel D’Auria, Rachel Johnson, Timothy Johnson, Tony Johnson, Todd Johnson, Michael Shanahan, Jonathan Esparza, Amanda Kruse, Jordan Johnson, Justine Johnson, and Jacob Johnson; honorary grandchildren, Josh Olson, Jana Kelly, Luke Olson, Natalie Johnson, Lindsay Weber, and Sarah Olson; step-grandchildren, Hollie Toppin, Erin Tyler, Tim Toppin, and Noelle Zobeck; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn (Johnny) Kurina of Seattle, Washington, Jeannie (Ken) Moss of Rochester, Minnesota; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Motland of Osage.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charlie in 2016; brothers, Russell Motland and Leonard Motland; and sisters, Laurine Olson, Angeline Denning, and Olive Gaarder.
