Teachers, administration reach contract agreement with new bargaining system

Charles City, Iowa – Teachers, administration and staff of the Charles City School district have come to an agreement on next year’s salaries.

Tyler Downing represents teacher interests with the Charles City Education Association.

He says his group, along with Superintendent Mike Fisher, used interest based bargaining to reach their agreements.

The three year contract, pending board and association ratification, will see a two-point-three-three percent increase in total packages, which includes salary and insurance for certified staff.  Part –time staff will see a 25 cent raise.

Downing says he’s happy with the result.

This style of negotiation is different than the process the majority of the state uses which is conflict based bargaining which can drag out over long periods of time.

These negotiations begin in October.

Fisher says both groups needed to be forthcoming with their interests from the beginning to make the process successful.

Flex time, part time and full time employee hours and maternity leave are examples of other pieces discussed during the negotiations.
