Bridge construction two years out, funding being secured

Danger signs posted on the banks of the Cedar River upstream from unstable bridge

Charles City, Iowa – Reconstruction of the historic Charlie Western Trail Bridge is still two-years out according to Charles City Administrator Steve Diers.

He tells North Iowa News he’s hopeful it will open before the spring of 2021 as bidding of the project will be awarded in January or February of 2020.

City officials and the bridge engineer are working on the design of the replacement.

Diers says a major factor in the project is the $1.2 million dollar price tag.

He added there will be a public fund drive and the city will have to borrow money to finish reconstruction.

The 108-year-old bridge was demolished in late July.

Parts of the Charlie Western Trail remain closed.
