Sump pump ordinance official, increases ease to homeowners

Charles City, Iowa – Charles City’s new sump pump ordinance is official after the council unanimously approved the third reading at Monday night’s city council meeting.

Mayor Dean Andrews says the change is directed towards helping homeowners and isn’t aimed at being controversial.

The ordinance allows homeowners to connect their sump pumps to the storm sewer or sub drains.  The city must inspect the installation to make sure it meets certain specifications.  Previously, homeowners could do this on an individual basis.

City Engineer John Fallis says another prevision allows the city to step in.

Fallis added a nuisance could be piling water leading freezing  on pavement or other issues impeding water drainage such as moss build up.
