Sickman awarded ‘New Comer of the Year’ for dedication to students

Charles City, Iowa – Karleen Sickman chalks her recent award for teaching up to coincidence.

Last week, the Iowa Association of Alternative Education honored Sickman with the Newcomer of the Year.  While she’s been educating area youth for 14 years, this is her second year teaching at risk students in the success center.

Sickman tells North Iowa news she’s part of an expansion from the high school into the middle school.

Her job helps give students new perspectives about school and education.

She says the most difficult part of her job when students aren’t in the building.

Sickman added the highlight of her job is interacting with the students and seeing the smiles on their faces.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City. As a young kid, he would always be caught singing along to songs on the radio. He says he's good at karaoke but we think otherwise. ;) In his free time, he enjoys beginning new projects at home and hardly ever finishing them. Chris lives in Charles City with his wife Vicki, daughter Brynlee and son Jaxon.
