Fire rips through Floyd County home

CCFD says oily rags could be to blame

Charles City, Iowa – A fire tore through a residence in rural Floyd County Thursday afternoon leaving the home a total loss.

According to the Charles City Fire Department, the inferno began before their arrival just after 12 pm near 240th Street and Miner Avenue.

Smoke and fire were visible from the exterior upon firefighters arriving.  No one was home, but the fire had a significant head start leaving major damage according to fire officials.

The cause remains under investigation, but investigators believe it to be spontaneous combustion of oily rags which were not in a proper container within the residence.
