The Score Sheet: District track and field postponements, Iowa and Cornell baseball

Due to wind and cold temperatures, yesterday’s co-ed district track and field meets have been moved to today.

District locations: Charles City, New Hampton at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, Nashua-Plainfield, North Butler, Osage, Riceville and Rockford at Northwood Kensett.

Turkey Valley and South Winneshiek at Edgewood-Colesburg.

The 24th Iowa Hawkeye baseball team closes out the home season beginning Friday night by opening a three game series against Michigan State. The Hawkeyes are 11-7 in conference play and take on a Spartan team that opened the season 3-18 but has won four of its last seven in the Big Ten.

Iowa coach Rick Heller:

The Hawkeyes are 18-5 at home and looking to finish strong at Banks Field.

Iowa has won six straight weekend series but in four of the last five the Hawkeyes have failed to complete a sweep by dropping the Sunday game.

The Cornell College baseball team opens the Midwest Conference Tournament in Monmouth, Illinois on Friday morning. The Rams qualified as the runner-up in the South Division and play North Division champ the University of Chicago in the opening round.

Cornell coach Seth Wing feels his team is playing its best at the right time.

Chicago won a regular season series against Cornell by taking the rubber game of the three game set in 12 innings.

Wing says the Rams are confident even though Chicago will provide a tough opener.

Monmouth plays Ripon in the other first round game.

Chris Berg

Chris was born in Webster City and raised in Charles City. As a young kid, he would always be caught singing along to songs on the radio. He says he's good at karaoke but we think otherwise. ;) In his free time, he enjoys beginning new projects at home and hardly ever finishing them. Chris lives in Charles City with his wife Vicki, daughter Brynlee and son Jaxon.
