Drone helps aid in rescue of stranded kayakers

Cresco, Iowa – The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office used a drone Tuesday afternoon to rescue 11 stranded kayakers on the Upper Iowa River.

The report came in at 1:50 pm saying the kayakers were stranded on an island near Chimney Rock Park.

The sheriff’s office says one of the individuals overturned, lost their kayak and hung onto tree branches awaiting rescue.

Decorah Fire and Rescue crews used a drone to locate the party, whose ages ranged from 6 to 71 years old, and rescued them to safety.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.  No injuries were reported.
