Mayor Andrews: Simply Essential closing came as surprise

Charles City, Iowa – Charles City Mayor Dean Andrews spoke publically Thursday morning on the KCHA morning show and said the Simply Essential closing announcement came out of now where.


The chicken processing plant sent a notice to its employees Thursday, June 6 saying their jobs would be terminated or laid off in two months.

The plant employs 513 total employees, with the majority of them working in the Charles City location according to Andrews.


He says other companies have contacted the chamber office saying they are hiring.


State records show the Iowa Economic Development Authority Board awarded the company $1 million in investment tax credits and $66,000 through a refund of sales and other taxes paid during construction.
