Charles City, Iowa – The Smokin’ Joe’s BBQ team of Mason City, led by Joe Mathahs, earned the first-place trophy and $750 cash prize in the 2019 Smoke on the Cedar BBQ event Saturday in Charles City. Smokin’ Joe’s edged out runner-up 2 Sauced 2 Pork BBQ, also of Mason City, in the 11-team competition 173.166 to 172.560. Hot Rod’s BBQ, of Clear Lake, placed third in the certified Kansas City BBQ judging contest involving St. Louis-style BBQ ribs.

The Quality Auto Grill Team of Charles City garnered the most votes during the public sampling to win the People’s Choice trophy and $100 cash award. Darin Tusler and Butt Master also earned the $100 prize for best side dish or dessert with a pineapple dessert creation in the optional “Anything But …” contest between the BBQ teams.

In all, $1,300 in cash prizes were awarded.

The event, formerly known as the Charles City BBQ Challenge, is put on by the Charles City Area Chamber of Commerce and in its fifth year under the current format after moving to the downtown riverfront. Smoke on the Cedar is held in conjunction with the Charles City Whitewater Challenge river competition. A PAWS Dog Jog and Hooligan river races also made up the riverfront festival offerings on Saturday.

“Thanks to all of our sponsors, BBQ teams, the public who bought tickets and especially our terrific volunteer committee who make great community events like this happen in Charles City,” said Community Development Director Mark Wicks.
